How to Find the Right Divorce Lawyer for You

How to Find the Right Divorce Lawyer for You

When approaching a divorce, it can be tempting to hire the first attorney who says he can get you what you want out of the marriage. But every lawyer’s process is different, and you do not have to hire the first one you meet. In fact, it is a good idea to consult with multiple attorneys and choose the one whose process reflects your goals most closely. Here are some topics to discuss in your search.

  • Experience and background. Obviously, you want to have a qualified lawyer in your corner. If your case involves complicated assets or other delicate matters, you may want to go for a lawyer who has had experience with those aspects of cases before.
  • Each lawyer will approach each case differently, and depending on your timeline and priorities during the divorce proceedings, you may or may not be seeing eye-to-eye with your prospective lawyer.
  • Support staff. Generally, your lawyer is not the only one who will be handling the case, and in many cases, you will be corresponding with secretaries and paralegals, and they will be handling minutiae of your case. Ask to speak with them for further confidence in your potential legal team.
  • Ask about costs, length, priorities, and anything else you consider important throughout the divorce. Some lawyers will resist answering parts of this (particularly costs), but the way they answer this question can be just as important as the answers they give. Look for honesty.

Most importantly, it is vital that you choose an attorney you believe you can trust, who will look out for your best interests, and with whom you can be completely vulnerable and honest. Such a partnership will make the whole process easier and less stressful for you.
