Can I start a relationship while my divorce is pending?

That is a question I am asked from time to time during a client’s divorce matter. It is also one of those questions that can be answered in a variety of ways. The most appropriate answer is that you should not start a relationship while your divorce is pending. Some judges consider the marriage to be essentially over when the divorce complaint is filed. However, not everyone agrees with that philosophy especially when children are involved. It is best to wait until your divorce is final to begin a new relationship. For long-term relationship success, it is best to wait at least a year or more after your divorce is final to begin a new relationship. You need time to learn about who you are and to heal from the experience you have just had when your marriage ended.
