3 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Divorce Attorney

3 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Divorce Attorney

During the initial consultation with a divorce attorney, you will likely discuss your situation. You may have been served with a complaint or merely contemplating a divorce. Most of your discussion will likely involve the legal issues surrounding your case and most attorneys will be able to explain and offer some guidance on these matters. Before making that final decision to retain your attorney,  however, you may want to consider asking these three questions.

  1. How Long Have You Been Practicing Law?

As a general rule, more experienced lawyers are better equipped to help you navigate this difficult process. With a more thorough understanding of the law and unique perspective, they’ll be able to explain the most likely outcomes of each approach and help you develop the most realistic expectations possible.

  1. What Dispute Resolution Methods Do You Use?

Divorce cases often involve heightened emotions and hurt feelings, which can lead to unnecessary and expensive litigation. The best divorce attorneys know how to de-escalate tense situations and negotiate mutually agreeable outcomes, so you can move on with your life. However, they should be willing and able to defend your rights in court if necessary.

  1. Have You Handled Similar Cases in the Past?

Each divorce case is different, with varying levels of conflict and unique legal problems to address. Whenever possible, try to find a divorce attorney who has successfully handled similar cases in the past—for example, if your case will involve the valuation of a jointly owned business, or division of military retirement, it would be beneficial to have an attorney who has already handled other such cases with similar issues.
