How Long Does The Adoption Process Take? It Depends — But You’re Not Alone

The path to adoption is filled with hope, anticipation, and a lot of questions—starting with one of the most common: “How long is this going to take?”

At New Beginnings Family Law, we understand that time feels different when you’re waiting to grow your family. The good news? While timelines vary, we’re here to guide you with clarity and compassion every step of the way.

Some Adoptions Are Faster Than You Think

If you’re a stepparent or a close relative—such as a grandparent, sibling, or uncle—a streamlined process is available under Alabama law. These adoptions are often faster because:

  • The child typically already has a meaningful relationship with the adoptive adult
  • Pre-placement investigations are usually streamlined to only require certain information and background checks
  • The child must have lived with the adoptive party for at least one year, unless good cause is shown.

These cases often wrap up in as little as 60 to 90 days, depending on court schedules and documentation.

Adopting Through An Agency? Timeframes Vary

When adopting through an agency, the wait depends on factors like the child’s age and availability:

  • Infant adoptions can involve long waitlists
  • Adoptions of older children (ages 3–18) often move more quickly

Working with an interstate agency can help connect you with adoptive opportunities in other states. These cases require two lawyers and coordination across state lines, but they can speed up the timeline—especially if you’re open to adopting outside your immediate area.

International Adoptions Take Time—But Are Worth The Wait

If you’re pursuing an international adoption, prepare for a longer process. These adoptions include:

  • Comprehensive home studies
  • Legal clearance in both the U.S. and the child’s country
  • Possible travel and in-country visits

While it’s a lengthier route, international adoption brings the joy of uniting families across borders—and we’re here to help ensure every legal and emotional detail is covered.
