What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is defined as acts of violence between parents, children, husbands, wives, and couples who are dating. The state of Alabama has three different categories of domestic violence when filing charges, including a felony category for serious offenses. Domestic violence can be described as anything that harms another person including pushing, slapping, biting, kicking, choking and more serious acts of violence.

What Can You Do?

If you have been the victim of domestic violence, there are things you can do to protect yourself. Report the incident as soon as possible by calling the police. The police will make a report, obtain your testimony and take pictures of your injuries. If necessary, they will take the offender into custody so you can be safe. You may also be able to obtain a restraining order or protection from abuse order to keep the offender from returning to your home or place of employment.
