How to Stay Healthy and Active in your Grey Years.

How to Stay Healthy and Active in your Grey Years.

You are not resigned to poor health once you advance in years. Everyone deserves a fulfilling and active life, and the New Beginnings Family Law Office wants to let you know how you can achieve it:

Eating Healthy

It is important to make a conscious effort to create a healthy diet. Collaborate with your doctor to determine which foods will help or hurt any medical conditions that may be present. In general terms, incorporating these foods into your diet will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle:

  • Fruits and Vegetables – Attempt to eat two to three cups of dark leafy green vegetables that contain high antioxidant levels such as kale, broccoli and spinach. Eat two to three servings of fruits that are high in color such as watermelon, cantaloupe and strawberries. These foods will assist with digestion and boost energy.
  • Protein – Avoid low quality protein such as bacon, bologna and hotdogs; these processed meats can introduce heart disease or cancer. Do, however, incorporate fish and beef for meats with protein; milk, beans and soy are also great sources of protein.
  • Grains – Avoid processed white flour products and whole grains to encourage digestion.
  • Water – Drinking at least eight glasses of water a day aids digestion and prevents urinary tract infections.

Staying Active

Don’t allow low energy and fear of low energy keep you lethargic; staying active will combat those very issues! After consulting with your doctor about any health concerns that may make certain exercises avoidable, create an exercise schedule that includes cardiovascular activities, strength training, flexibility and balance and stick to it. Begin slowly with easy goals so you can observe your body in action during each exercise and determine if any precautions or alterations are needed. A few examples of effective exercises that you may enjoy:

  • Water aerobics
  • Yoga
  • Walking
  • Fitness classes
  • Chair exercises with dumbbells

It is also important to stay active in a social way; joining classes, playing golf with a group, and taking a walk with friends are great ways to remain both socially and physically active.

Families are important to the attorneys and staff at New Beginnings Family Law, and it is important for each person in a family to be healthy and active. Consider these steps so that you and your loved ones can enjoy the benefits of your self-care!
